Trudeau says Khadr settlement troubles him, but it could have cost more

Tabitha Speer and a former USA soldier are trying to go after Khadr's assets.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday defended the C$10.5 million payout to a Canadian man held at Guantanamo Bay for a decade, calling it the best choice in hard circumstances but said he understood why many opposed the settlement.

The Toronto-born Khadr was captured in Afghanistan in 2002 at the age of 15.

Let us hope Omar Khadr never gets to enjoy a dime of the $8 million the Canadian government has awarded him, or gets to send any of it to his terrorist chums in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he understands why Canadians are angry about the $10-million payout to Omar Khadr but insisted a court case would have ended up costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.

Conservative opposition leader Andrew Scheer has said the payout is "disgusting" and sends a awful message to Canada's military members and veterans.

"The measure of a society, of a just society, is not whether we stand up for people's rights when it's easy or popular to do so", Trudeau said.

A judge in Toronto has dismissed a request to freeze Omar Khadr's assets. We can only imagine how the grief-stricken widow and children of Sergent Speer feel about this Trudeau government apologizing to Khadr and paying him such a huge sum of money. He pleaded guilty to murder but later recanted and said he was coerced into making the plea. They won a $134m wrongful death judgment in 2015.

They want an injunction aimed at preserving any money the federal government paid Khadr for breaching his rights.

But judge Edward Belobaba turned it down.

"It's unusual to be able to seize anyone's assets or freeze anyone's assets before obtaining a judgment", said Khadr's lawyer Nathan Whitling.

The plaintiffs are seeking an urgent freeze order in Ontario Superior Court on Mr. Khadr's assets, pending the ultimate outcome of their bid to enforce a 2015 default USA civil court judgment against Mr. Khadr in Ontario.

Winer, who also spoke to reporters following the decision, said they came to court believing they had a good case and a good shot at seeking injunctive relief.

"This was the responsible path to take", Trudeau said at a press conference where he revealed that former astronaut Julie Payette will be Canada's next Governor General.

"Obviously, everyone knows it's a high test and a high standard to meet, and we put our best foot forward", he said. He served some of the time in a Canadian prison.
