Former Mariner Pineda getting second opinion on Tommy John surgery

Former Mariner Pineda getting second opinion on Tommy John surgery

The Yankees will get a second opinion but it's nearly certain that the initial diagnosis is correct.

New York Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda needs Tommy John surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the team announced Friday. Surgery would keep Pineda sidelined possibly until 2019. The 28-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent in the winter, and this will obviously severely limit his value on the open market.

The pitching woes contributed to the Yankees' 7-18 stretch to close the first half that spoiled what had been an excellent start to the season.

Pineda had fought back from a serious shoulder injury when he first arrived to the Yankees in 2012. Michael Pineda might be out for the year. Cashman said top prospect Chance Adams could be a starting option at some point.

4.2 magnitude quake hits near Cushing
Another quake with a magnitude of 3.8 was recorded near Stroud at 9:04 a.m., and a 3.7 occurred at 9:17 a.m. A pair of earthquakes in central Oklahoma Friday morning reportedly shook people in southern Kansas.

"We will be careful buyers", Cashman said.

Pineda's biggest obstacle to success in the big leagues has been staying healthy. Here today and gone tomorrow.

Rookie lefty Jordan Montgomery was recalled from Triple-A Scranton and will start Friday's series opener against Boston.

One thing you can say for certain about the Yankees this season is they sure aren't boring.
