Honolulu apartment fire: Fatalities as dozens of firefighters battle blaze

Honolulu Fire Chief Manuel Neves says that without a doubt if there had been sprinklers, the fire would not have spread past the unit where it started.

Three people were confirmed dead in the blaze, according to The Associated Press and Hawaii News Now. It is next to the Ala Wai Canal and contains more than 560 residential units.

Local firefighters and police were going door-to-door in search of residents. Debris was falling from the burned area and, according to Horiguchi, flames appeared to be engulfing the 28th floor, too.

Hundreds of residents ran from the building as smoke billowed from the 568-unit building.

Two patients were in serious but stable condition. Paramedics are expediting emergency treatment with a triage location inside the building. The fire department headed over to the building Friday at 2:15 p.m. local time (8:15 p.m. ET).

Fire officials were also responding to reports of people trapped in their apartments, the paper added. "It doesn't help to just stand and watch", he said.

"It's been an orderly evacuation", said security guard Leonard Rosa, who was answering phones from the front lobby of the 36-story building near Waikiki.
