Ataribox first look: New photos of the Atari 2600-inspired game console

Gaming company Atari shared some images of the new Ataribox console in a message to fans on Monday (which we saw via The Verge) as well as some details about its spec sheet. Each will have a raised back and "ribbing", making it reminiscent of the console that inspired it, while options for glass or wood front finishes will be available.

As can been seen in the images below, the Ataribox houses two HDMI ports, four USB ports and has SD card support. Two versions of the Ataribox will be released, one in wood, and one in black / red. It's not clear if that current content involves simply republishing Rollercoaster Tycoon, but it appears that the Ataribox will be similar to the NES and SNES Classic in providing access to old titles in modern retro hardware.

The selection of ports further confirms that Atari's upcoming platform isn't exclusively intended for playing retro games.

Final Fight Abigail Coming To Street Fighter 5
Alex will receive a costume that resembles his look in Street Fighter III, with longer hair and green trousers . Abigail is most typically found brawling away in the Final Fight series, but not in just over a week's time.

When Atari announced it was jumping back into the game-console arena, those old enough to remember the 8-bit glory days of the Atari 2600 - like myself - perked up, briefly lighting up whatever part of the brain responsible for feelings of nostalgia. One is a more modern black/red box, while the other features wood panelling, which serves as a nice callback to the Atari 2600.

It could be another android style console so we might be seeing games that aren't AAA. We still have no pricing, availability or release date information. "We're not teasing you intentionally." continues the newsletter "We want to get this right, so we've opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life". There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead. We also don't know the actual specs of the hardware but hopefully more will be revealed soon. We'll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride!
