Iraq Faces Challenges in Rebuilding Mosul as Resident Return Home

From there, they were sent to a jail in Badush west of Mosul, where fighting is still on.

The Iraqi army, backed by a U.S-led air coalition, had been battling the terror group since October to dislodge it from Mosul, its last stronghold in northern Iraq.

Families of 39 missing Indians in Iraq met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Iraqi counterterrorism units reported on July 15 that they had detained 20 female Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants, including three Turkish citizens, captured in a secret tunnel discovered under the Old City neighborhood of Quleiat in Mosul.

Singh reached Baghdad on Wednesday and handed over a letter from External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari in this connection.

Police say the group altered the identity of the horses by replacing their microchips or falsifying their passports. The horses came from Portugal and Spain and were slaughtered at an unspecified location.

"Only after the area is cleared in Badush can we get more information about their location and their well being", she said, adding that she personally gave that information to the families of the missing Indians. "The very same day I asked V K Singh to go to Erbil and personally oversee where the missing Indians are and how can they be rescued".

She said, "East Mosul has been completely freed from ISIS and now buildings are being sanitised and authorities are not allowing civilians to go there as there may be bombs and other explosives".

Explaining the Minister's comments, Gurpinder Kaur, leader of the delegation of the 39 families, told The Hindu that the government believed that the latest information was reliable as it was shared by high-level officials with General (Retd.) V.K. Singh, who returned from Iraq after visiting various spots. The Indians - construction workers who are mostly from Punjab - had been abducted in 2014.

"I announce from here the end and the failure and the collapse of the terrorist state of falsehood and terrorism which the terrorist ISIS announced from Mosul", Abadi said in a speech shown on state television.
