NF Railway to run special trains in flood affected Assam

Close to seven lakh people in 17 districts of Assam continued to reel under floods in Assam. He said, the Chief Secretary held a review meeting with Deputy Commissioners of flood-hit districts through video conferencing today and told to give stress on providing health service and pure drinking water.

Only in the northeastern state of Assam, the death toll rose to 60, while 1,1 million were hit by the weather, said in a statement the Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

He directed the five districts covered by the Kaziranga National Park - Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Biswanath Chariali and Sonitpur - to take stringent steps to safeguard wild animals affected by floods with help from police and the Forest Department. Till yesterday, 10 lakh people were affected in the latest wave of floods across 21 districts in the state.

Other rivers flowing above the danger mark include Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Barak at AP Ghat in Cachar and Badarpurghat in Karimganj, Katakhal at Matizuri in Hailakandi and Kushiyara at Karimganj town.

Due to the impact of the floods, many roads, embankments and bridges have been damaged in several districts, including Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Biswanath, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Golaghat, Majuli, Sivasagar and Karimganj. "We are asked to the district commissioners to provide adequate relief items to the flood-affected people", the Assam finance minister said. The chief minister also instructed for taking appropriate steps for preventing diseases from spreading and taking epidemic form in flood affected areas by holding medical camps and taking other such measures.

Some of the Ministers and MLAs, who have been undertaking visits to their areas due to the floods, have also been facing the ire of the marooned people due to lack of proper distribution of relief materials.

"Farmers in the flood affected areas should be provided quality seeds for cultivation in coordination with the district agriculture officers", he said.

Flood relief being distributed by Goodricke Indias Dejoo Tea Estate at Bogeleejan in North Lakhimpur on Sunday.
