Panthers unexpectedly fire GM Dave Gettleman

The Carolina Panthers "relieved" their general manager Dave Gettleman of his duties Monday, inspiring shock, pleasure and a slew of "Game of Thrones" TV show references on Twitter.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have made a decision to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager", Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in the team's release.

Before joining the Panthers, Gettleman was employed for nearly 30 years in National Football League scouting departments.

During an appearance on the Know Them from Adam podcast last week, Williams said the Panthers were one of four teams he wouldn't play for next season, along with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys.

Effinger was arrested and charged the 20-year-old was charged with Boating While Intoxicated and possessing alcohol as a minor. Two people reportedly were flown to a hospital with injuries, including a skull fracture and a partial lower-arm amputation.

Although he has been a part of seven Super Bowl teams and 16 playoff sides, the 66-year-old has been let go by Carolina. At the time of his release, Williams told WBTV Charlotte that he was OK with the team's decision because of the way he and his family were treated when Williams' mother died of breast cancer.

A team source indicated Gettleman was not interested in giving Olsen a new deal only two years after Olsen received a three-year, $22 million extension, although the feeling inside the organization was that Davis would get at least another year added to his contract before the start of training camp next week. Norman then became a free agent and signed with the Redskins.

Smith, arguably the franchise's most popular player, never took the move well.

Gettleman's firing continues an offseason of massive change in Carolina.
