Santiago Ponzinibbio knocks Gunnar Nelson cold in 1:22

Santiago Ponzinibbio avoided that fate by ending the main event of UFC Fight Night 113 on Sunday before Nelson could even try a takedown.

Ahead of this fight with Nelson, Ponzinibbio spoke with about the contest itself, and where a win puts him in the stacked welterweight division.

Nelson came out of the gate looking strong on his feet and it appeared that he may have wobbled Ponzinibbio early, which probably only bolstered his confidence to stay striking on the feet. In terms of total strikes, the two punches that hurt and then knocked out Nelson were the only ones Ponzinibbio was credited for.

Nelson surges forward with a hook.

Ponzinibbio was quick to react to Nelson losing his awareness and swarmed in for the kill, dropping him with another one-two combination. In the last ten seconds of the fight, Craig got knocked to the canvas before Rountree finished the fight with a big right hand.

"When I look back to where it all began, I'm glad I started when I did, and I'm glad it started that way", the Dubliner said afterwards. "This is my job". I do my best every day and fight with my heart.

We need to concert efforts between different countries and this should not be in the hands and shoulders of one country only. He went on to accuse Qatar of "funding, supporting, and enabling extremists from the Taliban to Hamas and Gaddafi".

Ponzinibbio has now won five fights in a row, but none more impressive than taking out Nelson in the first round by knockout. I can't wait to fight.

"I am ready for everything and anyone in the world at 170lbs".

With this knockout, Ponzinibbio now has 14 career first-round finishes.

The upset victory was Ponzinibbio's fifth on the bounce and seventh inside the Octagon.

Ponzinibbio pushed the pace from the very start of the fight, connecting early with the renowned grappler before sending him crashing to the mat with a huge straight left, to score the biggest win of his mixed martial arts career and announce his arrival as a legitimate contender in the UFC's 170-pound welterweight division.
