Mayawati threatens to resign as Rajya Sabha MP

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said on Tuesday that she has made a decision to quit Rajya Sabha after she stormed out of the Upper House raising the issue of atrocities against Dalits under the present NDA government. It's a shame. If I can't speak about our weaker sections in the House then I have no right to stay in the House.

"Since the time the BJP has come to power, there has been exploitation of the Dalits, the poor, minorities, and backward castes", the BSP chief said. "One more dalit was murdered after that", she said. This infuriated Mayawati and when her repeated demands to be allowed to speak went unheard, the BSP leader staged a walkout.

She raised the Saharanpur violence and criticised the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh for its handling of the matter.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister accused Rajya Sabha deputy chairman PJ Kurien of not giving her a chance to speak.

Before she could make much headway in discussing the issue, Mayawati was asked to cut short her talk as she had exceeded the three minutes given to her to make her submission. "I am not being heard and am not allowed to speak", she added.

The Dalit leader went on to accuse the BJP of being anti-Dalit and anti-minorities. The BJP saw Mayawati's threat as a "challenge" to the chair.

Following this, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi asked Mayawati to apologize for allegedly insulting the house. Due to the uproar, the chair adjourned the Rajya Sabha.
