7.0 magnitude quake strikes western China, 5 confirmed dead

Beijing, Aug 8 A 7-magnitude quake tonight jolted a remote but popular tourist destination in China's southwest, killing at least five people and injuring over 60, the state media reported, with officials fearing the death toll could be much higher.

An quake with a magnitude of 5.3 shook the southwestern Turkish town of Bodrum on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.

A 3.3 aftershock was registered at the same depth 20 minutes later.

The affected region, Jiuzhaigou county, includes one of the country's most famous national parks, a Unesco World Heritage Site known for karst formations and lakes. Song did not say where the five tourists who died were from.
