Maya Rudolph to star in Ardmore native's 'Christmas Story' on Fox

The network announced that Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) will be starring in a live performance of A Christmas Story, the 2012 Broadway musical based on the classic movie of the same name. The musical takes place in 1940s in and centers on a child named Ralphie, who wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.

The show, which will air from 7-10 p.m. on December 17, was scored by Ardmore's Benj Pasek and his composing partner Justin Paul, who are writing several new songs for the TV version.

Rudolph will star as Ralphie's mom, the role made famous by countless Christmas Day marathons by Melinda Dillon. Based on the writings of Jean Shepherd, the book was written by Joseph Robinette, with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The now-classic 1983 feature film, which became a sleeper hit, has since taken on a new life, along with growing critical acclaim, to become a perennial holiday favorite beloved by families and kids of all ages.

A Christmas Story is the latest live TV event for Fox, following Grease: Live in January 2016, which starred Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit and Vanessa Hudgens. The TV adaptation will be filmed on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. Platt is also producing a live version of Rent for Fox.

Grease: Live producer Marc Platt will executive produce the production with Adam Siegal.
