Tiny chip can REGROW damaged organs in MAJOR medical breakthrough

The device uses a technique called Tissue Nanotransfection, or TNT, to reprogram existing skin cells to fix injured or aging tissue.

"With this technology, we can convert skin cells into elements of any organ with just one touch", said Dr Sen.

USA Today reported Monday the process starts with a silicone chip no bigger than a dime that is placed on the surface of the skin of a living body.

In one experiment, a badly damaged mouse leg was saved by the technology creating new blood vessels in tissue that had previously been lacking blood flow.

Thus far, researchers say that the technique has worked 98 percent of the time. The procedure only takes a second and is not invasive.

Researchers were able to reprogram skin cells to become vascular cells in severely injured legs that lacked blood flow.

In another application, the technology was used on an injured brain and helped mice recover from a stroke.

The Nanotransfection technology is composed of two major components.

Researchers demonstrate a process known as tissue nanotransfection at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. It involves using a nanotechnology-based chip and placing it on the skin of a patient.

This cargo, when delivered using the chip, converts an adult cell from one type to another, said Daniel Gallego-Perez, an assistant professor at Ohio State.

The process works simply by touching the skin near the injury with a nanochip to introduce the desired DNA.

It instantly delivers new DNA or RNA into living skin cells to change their function, with a small electrical charge that's barely felt by the patient, thus aiding the speedy fix of injured tissue as well as restoring the function of ageing tissue, including organs.

The Guardian said that, according to researchers, this turns the patients' skin into a "bioreactor", allowing it to fix damaged tissue in the applied area or at another site on the body. Additionally, this technology does away with the need to use viruses as a delivery system for the new cells.

"The concept is very simple". For a long time researchers have tried to come up with a mechanism that could treat and even fix brain injuries.

The technology is pending FDA approval, but Sen expects it to be tested on human in 2017.
