Gaza Rocket Explodes in Southern Israel

Rockets are occasionally fired into Israel by smaller Gaza-based groups but Israel says it holds Hamas, which governs the coastal enclave, responsible and routinely responds to rockets by targeting Hamas sites.

A rocket fired at southern Israel landed in an open area near the southern city of Ashkelon without causing any known injuries or damage, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Tuesday.

No organization has claimed responsibility for the firing.

According to Palestinian media reports, the initiative is meant to improve the economic and humanitarian situation in Gaza. Two people were seriously wounded and another sustained light injuries, local media reported.

In another New Hampshire case, McCarthy was convicted of first-degree assault for the June 2001 stabbing of a minor in Manchester. The authorities thought they were closing in on him earlier Tuesday, but a search of a home in Chilhowee came up empty.

On Tuesday evening, warning sirens blared in southern Israel as the rocket from the Gaza Strip was sacked into the country.

"This was crossing a risky line that Israel will bear the consequences", Hamas said in a statement after the Israeli assault.

"The airstrikes targeted Hamas positions in the centre of the Gaza Strip", Qasem told Al Jazeera.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since the Islamic militant group took control of Gaza a decade ago, most recently in 2014.
