A police spokesman says a New York City police officer has been shot in Brooklyn.

The officer arrived at the home, where he talked with the mother of the suspected gunman, police said.

He and different officers had been reacting to a report of a sincerely bothered individual when a man opened fire, police said.

Two bullets hit the officer's bulletproof vest and another shot hit his arm after bouncing off his watch. The 30-year-old officer works out of the 75th precinct and has two years on the force. According to the news network, the injured officer was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, but a spokesperson from NYPD could not confirm additional details.

Police sources told NY1 that an armed man appears to be barricaded inside a house at the location.

"He's a courageous young man", O'Neill said, explaining that "he's got a good spirit". "He was actually, you know, trying to make light of the situation in his own hospital bed; having a lot of spirit; a lot of energy". When police finally gained access, they found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
