The deals, however, involve more changes to a team with just 28 players who opened training camp on Buffalo's roster a year ago.

The Bills declined to pick up Watkin's fifth-year option on his contract back in May, so his future with the organization was already in question. The 2019, 2020 and 2021 salary is voidable without penalty on the final day of the 2018 league year.

Matthews, 25, totaled 225 catches for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons with the Eagles.

Watkins, the fourth overall pick in 2014, had been long plagued by injuries throughout his professional career - especially in 2016 where he missed the last eight games with a foot fracture. Gaines in exchange for Watkins and a 2018 sixth-round pick - to McDermott and owner Terry Pegula after the Bills' preseason loss Thursday night to the Minnesota Vikings.

In each of the two trades, draft picks were involved. "I think his vertical presence and even just his threat and his name, I think will allow defenses to play us different, because you always have to have someone over the top of him". They also sent cornerback Ronald Darby to the Philadelphia Eagles, acquiring wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft in return, as reported by the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Sometimes that's a day-to-day process and sometimes those are not easy decisions from a leadership standpoint.

The team is replacing Kenny Britt, who was the first Rams receiver to cross the 1,000 yard mark (by two yards), since Torry Holt in 2007. The Bills paid a hefty price to draft him in 2014, switching places with the Browns (No. 9 to No. 4) while also giving the Browns their 2015 first-round pick to ensure they could pick Watkins.
