The player's transfer request came hours after the club's owners Fenway Sports Group released a statement saying "no offers will be considered" for Coutinho this summer, with Jurgen Klopp backing the owners' sentiments.

The player himself hasn't given any hint as to what he truly wants, though, but it's believed he has eyes set on a Camp Nou move.

Barcelona have had two bids turned down for the 25-year-old, the second in the region of £90 million (€99m) on Wednesday.

Barcelona are expected to return to the negotiating table with a new bid soon but according to the Reds they won't be entertaining any more approaches for Coutinho.

Liverpool playmaker, Philippe Coutinho, has officially handed in a transfer request.

Liverpool begin their 2017/18 season with a Premier League match away to Watford on Saturday, but Liverpool said on Friday that Coutinho would miss the game due to a back injury.

Barça have plenty of money to spend, having sold Coutinho's compatriot Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record £198 million (€220m) last week. "They played some incredible football past year and had just a couple of problems", he told DAZN.

Gerrard was invited back to Liverpool by current boss Klopp, who pledged to give the former Reds captain all the help he needed in his attempts to move into management.

Gray's signing could have cast further doubt over Deeney's future but, asked if he would stay, Silva said: "Of course, he's our player and our captain and he's one player we hope to keep".

FSG's public stance is likely to encourage Barca to turn its attention towards signing Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund.
