Giroud wins thriller for Arsenal

Arsene Wenger says he gave Olivier Giroud the opportunity to leave Arsenal this summer, but was happy the striker stayed to deliver the victor in the 4-3 victory over Leicester to open the Premier League season.

The same opponents - and hot favourites for the Premier League title under Pep Guardiola - return south today (5.30pm) to the sold-out Amex with Hughton urging his troops to embrace the 38 tests facing them to achieve the goal this season of survival.

Giroud's days at Arsenal appeared to be numbered following the arrival of fellow France striker Lacazette from Lyon for a club-record £46.5m fee.

The hosts' joy was short-lived, however, as Shinji Okazaki equalized for the Foxes within minutes.

However, Arsenal managed to level matters on the stroke of halftime as Sead Kolasinac squared the ball for Welbeck to slot home, 2-2.

Arsenal continued to dominate possession in the second half, only to concede a another goal in the 55th minute, when Vardy redirected a Riyad Mahrez corner kick past home goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The France worldwide came off the bench to head home in the 85th minute as Arsenal started their season with a thrilling 4-3 win.

In the end, it was Wenger's moves that paid off. First came in Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud in the 67th minute.

Arsenal had to rally from 2-1 and 3-2 down in an action-packed Premier League opener that was decided by Giroud's thumping header off the crossbar in the 85th minute at the Emirates. It can happen in pre-season and anyway, I don't think I would have included him on Friday night.

"For example, hopefully next season I will be here and we are not going to spend how we spent this season".

As the half wore on, things slowed down and Arsenal started to control possession inside our half. "If you look at that from a neutral point, for a first game it was a top quality game".

Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare also talking to Sky Sports: "We spoke about being compact and being a threat with the pace of Vardy".

Carragher was speaking shortly after Giroud had helped Arsenal to an incredible comeback win against Leicester at the Emirates.

Giroud, who had been the subject of interest from Everton and West Ham earlier in the summer, won the game with his 99th goal for Arsenal with only minutes remaining.
