Glendale College to host viewing of the Great American Eclipse

During the eclipse, you'll see the shadow of the moon pass in front of the sun. The maximum eclipse will occur at 2:42 our area when about 80-percent of the sun will be covered.

For those who aren't making the journey into the path of totality, there are still several eclipse-related events that will be held around Western New York.

The National Park Service is encouraging visitors to prepare to have a safe viewing opportunity during the eclipse.

Solar eclipse glasses can be purchased at the 7-Eleven stores in San Luis Obispo and at Walmart in Santa Maria.

While millions of Americans will watch the solar eclipse on August 21, ophthalmologists are cautioning people about the permanent damage that can be done to vision from looking at the sun without protective glasses.

If you're planning on viewing the August 21 phenomenon, you'll want to have your eyes protected to prevent damage. Wearing ordinary sunglasses (or even multiple pairs) will not provide adequate eye protection. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is holding a free viewing party at the visitor center from 9 noon.

Should the day be rainy or cloudy, the event will take place inside the library's second-floor Veterans Room, where the eclipse will be live-streamed.
