Trump Cautious on China Inquiry Over Intellectual Property Theft

Trump's action amounts to a request that his trade representative determine whether an investigation is needed under the Trade Act of 1974. "If China helps us, I feel a lot different toward trade".

Trump is to make a day trip to Washington tomorrow, briefly interrupting his 17-day working vacation, a White House official said on Friday. It was not immediately clear whether he was talking about trade was the subject. The Trump administration is insisting the move isn't tied to heightening tensions with North Korea, but it is inherently connected to complications in the region. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the order before Trump's formal announcement. They know how I feel.

Kennedy of CSIS says business leaders express a range of opinions, depending on how much they discrimination they face in China and how key Chinese profits are to their business. "An important question going forward will be whether US companies and trade associations who have highlighted the problem will actually come forward and assist our government in the investigation or whether they will hide the facts, fearful that our government won't follow through, that the Chinese will retaliate against their interests or that they'll have to admit what's happened to their critical assets".

The concerns about China's practices include policies that encourage businesses to share or turn over their technology to joint venture partners, and China's use of state funds to promote its own intellectual property.

A state-run newspaper urged that China should remain neutral if North Korea follows through on its plans to fire missiles near Guam, Reuters reported Friday.

Trump has requested similar inquiries on trade, but the reports haven't been delivered on deadline.

"We lose hundreds of billions of dollars a year on trade with China".

The results of three separate investigations into trade deficits and the national security threats posed by imports of steel and aluminum, initially expected by the end of June, have yet to appear.
