Canadian Pastor Released from North Korean Prison, Returns Home

Hyeon Soo Lim was released on what state media described as "sick bail" after being handed a life sentence with hard labour in 2015.

Informing Lim's arrival to the country, Global Affairs Canada said in a statement: "Today, we join Pastor Lim's family and congregation in celebrating his long-awaited return to Canada".

He added that getting the pastor home took on increased urgency in June, following the death of Otto Warmbier, an American student who died days after being released from a North Koreanprison in a coma.

The family asked the public to respect their privacy, allowing him to rest for a day and catch up with family before appearing in public on Sunday to attend services at his church.

The South Korean-born pastor had been accused of subversive acts against Pyongyang, an allegation Canadian authorities strongly denied.
