United States president Donald Trump condemned "in the strongest possible terms" what he called an "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides" after the clashes and called for "a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives".

A 32-year-old woman who was crossing the street was killed and 19 people were injured, the Associated Press confirmed with hospital officials.

- The man who police say drove a Dodge Charger into a crowd of protesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia - killing one woman and injuring dozens more - has been named Saturday night. "Our message is plain and simple: Please go home and never come back. These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism".

"You are not wanted in this great Commonwealth".

The FBI's Richmond field office, the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia said they have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the deadly vehicular incident.

It is not yet clear whether the crash was in any way linked to a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville that turned violent Saturday.

The FBI and federal prosecutors said they've began a civil rights investigation after a vehicle crashed into a crowd Saturday in Charlottesville. People hit others with clubs and sprayed pepper spray during the event, which was protesting the renaming of city parks formerly named after Confederate generals and the impending removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The Detroit City Council is condemning the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, saying city leaders will work to embrace "our differences that make us stronger". "It has no place in America".

Both Virginia State Police troopers died Saturday when their police helicopter crashed and burned in Charlottesville, as they patrolled near the site of clashes between white nationalists and counterprotesters.

The remark drew criticism from Democrats and some Republicans for seeming to lump anti-racist protesters in with the far-right rally led by prominent leaders like David Duke and Richard Spencer.
