Manchester United v West Ham United Preview

Having led United to League Cup and Europa League glory last season, Mourinho's challenge for the new campaign is to turn them into title contenders.

"If I was a Premier League manager and had to choose between Lukaku, [Alvaro] Morata and [Alexandre] Lacazette, I would choose Lukaku, always".

United's second top scorer in the league last season was Juan Mata with six, while Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and the now departed Wayne Rooney each managed five.

Those reasons for excitement include the arrival of striker Romelu Lukaku for 75 million pounds ($97.42 million) from Everton, Chelsea's Serbia midfielder Nemanja Matic (40 mln) and Sweden defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica (30 mln).

"My family and I were fortunate enough to travel across seven states, driving over 2,000 miles, following Manchester City on tour (in America) this summer and we had the most fantastic time".

'I have conditions to deliver a better team than I did in the first season. What we had was midfielders, wingers, scoring, central defenders scoring goals at set pieces.

Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy have all been recruited to provide much-needed quality in the full-back areas, Ederson will do battle with Claudio Bravo for the number one jersey and Bernardo Silva joins a long list of creative midfielders at the club.

"There is no guarantee but naturally a manager in his second season knows the club and the players better".

Sir Mo Farah claims silver in 5000 metres at world athletics championships
For Farah, there will be no comeback on the track, as he now moves up the marathon looking to extend his gold medal haul. Farah had won the 10,000m on the opening night - but it was not to be in the 5,000m.

United did not finish lower than third in the Premier League era under Sir Alex Ferguson, but since his retirement have ended seventh, fourth, fifth and sixth.

The lack of goals contributed to 10 league draws at Old Trafford that cost the club any chance of challenging Chelsea for the title. "We are involved in four competitions and step by step, match after match, we are going to fight".

But Mourinho was nevertheless impressed with his former Chelsea charge: "I think he played really well, I think in the moment they were moving the ball well of course was hard for us in the midfield".

"I don't think I am in a position to be moaning and crying".

"Manchester United are one of the top three football clubs in the world, no doubt about it", he said in an interview conducted by UEFA.

He added: "I think we played everything so we don't lose this game".

City have spent around 200 million pounds ($259.46 million) to strengthen their squad in the close-season with other title contenders including Chelsea and Manchester United also spending heavily to bolster their teams.
