The number of students accepted on to degree courses at United Kingdom universities is down 1.3% compared to a year ago, according to Ucas figures. So make sure you look these up ahead of phoning, and have these names to hand throughout the call.

Every year, in August, thousands of students in the United Kingdom receive their A-level results and discover whether or not they have got the marks needed to take up a place at their chosen university. Many university applicants chose their degree course based on what they have enjoyed previously, or the grades they expect to achieve.

Figures from the Ucas university clearing house, released on Friday morning, show an increasing number of English 18-year-olds accepting places on undergraduate courses and a rise in the proportion taking up places through the post-A-levels process known as clearing.

"Students across Leeds have demonstrated a lot of hard work, effort and determination, as well as the high quality of teaching in our schools".

Sixth formers at St Augustine's Priory also collected a praiseworthy set of A Level results this year. Two of these students have gained modern apprenticeships and the other four are going into higher education. Flexibility will help you, but make sure it's a course you actually want to do as it's a big commitment. Our research showed that when students' grades did not meet the requirements, they sometimes asked to be transferred to the relevant department - but for these students, just asking to be transferred did not always work.
