Hyderabad: Arrests made in minor's marriage with Omani man

It was only when the girl's parents filed an FIR at the Falaknuma police station that the matter came to light.

In a freaky incident, a 16-year-old girl in Hyderabad was married to a 65-year-old Oman national for Rs 5 lakh. Sayeeda alleged that her husband Sikander and his sister Ghousia are responsible for getting the girl married to the sheikh.

Maneka Gandhi has also asked the Hyderabad's Police Commissioner of Police investigate the case and identify the persons who forced this illegal marriage.

She also asked the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to contact the girl's family members. The 64-year-old Omani national, Ahmad is even older than the girl's father. "He is saying that he paid Rs 5 lakhs to Sikander (brother-in-law) and his wife and purchased my daughter and wants that money back, then only he will send back my daughter", the woman says.

The girl, however, informed her parents over phone that her husband was mentally and physically torturing her. The girl's mother, Sayeeda Unnisa, R/O, Nawab Saheb Kunta, lodged a complaint with police, on Wednesday, pleading the girl be brought back to India from Muscat.

The mother, Syeeda Unnisa, alleged that her daughter had been fraudulently married off to 65-year-old Omani national Ahmed and pleaded that the girl be brought back to India. He returned home after the marriage and sent visa for the girl, who later joined him in Muscat. "We are waiting for the police to take action", the girl's father Syed Afsar said.

He said in most such cases, poor and illiterate families in the old city married off their young daughters to aged "sheikhs". "We will also take custody of the people who are directly and indirectly involved in this case", V. Satyanarayana, DCP was quoted by ANI.
