Raiders' Smith charged with felony assault

They play host to the Rams on Saturday in an exhibition game.

The Los Angeles County district attorney office says that Smith "beat and then stomped" his sister's boyfriend's head in Pasadena, California.

He's been charged with felony assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury.

He was being held on $80,000 bail after he was arrested around 2 p.m. Thursday in Pasadena, L.A. County Sheriff's Department inmate records showed.

Officials with the district say the teacher was alone in his classroom when the shooting occurred around 7:15 a.m. Lithia Springs, located in northeastern Douglas County, has a population of approximately 15,000.

However, with the former Utah Ute now in jail until his arraignment date on September 29, the Raiders will have to move forward with some of their younger cornerbacks. Smith's arraignment at the Los Angeles County Superior Cour is set for September 29. If convicted, Smith would face up to seven years in prison.

Smith, 30, who signed a $40-million, four-year deal last year, is due $9.5 million this season.

NFL.com reached out to the Raiders for a comment on the matter but the team has yet to give a response. He had issues during his first year with Oakland and had been demoted to the second string in training camp practices.
