West Nile found in Clinton County mosquitoes

Traps created to catch mosquitoes at six different locations in the county have turned up mosquitoes carrying the virus, but it's too early to know if any humans were exposed, Ed Kalas, Shawnee County Health Department environmental and community health manager, told the county commission Thursday.

In addition to West Nile virus, a single case of California serogroup encephalitis has occurred in Ripley County.

So far this year cases have been reported in Bolivar, Clay, Covington, Forrest (4), Hinds (7), Humphreys (2), Jones, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln (2), Lowndes, Madison (4), Noxubee, Perry, Rankin (6), Scott, and Wilkinson counties.

"This first case, along with other indicators, is a reminder to us all that mosquito season is here and it is very important for people to protect themselves when outdoors", said Dr. Olivia Kasirye, Sacramento County Public Health Officer.

Mild symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and a possible rash.

Officials have confirmed the presence of the West Nile virus in Kentucky's two largest cities.

Public health officials warn that West Nile virus activity continues to be intense and widespread throughout Sacramento County as many dead birds and mosquito samples have tested positive for the disease.

John Shepard with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station said, "This is getting top be the peak time of mosquitoes being positive for West Nile Virus". It remains critical, however, to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus. Around one in every 150 people develop a severe case.

About 20 percent of people who become infected with West Nile will develop symptoms. "So there are more of them in these types of conditions". Last year, the illness infected 13 people and seven horses, and one person over age 65 died from the symptoms. You can buy pre-treated clothes or treat your own.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so removing puddles or buckets, even birdbaths and plant containers, where water can pool, is imperative to control populations of the unpleasant insects.
