Amazon Opens Search for Second Headquarters City in North America

Amazon is on the hunt for a second home.

Amazon has opened the search for a second headquarters, promising to spend more than $5 billion on the site.

"We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters", Jeffrey P. Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, said in a statement. At the top of its list are things like: a metropolitan area with more than one million people, stable business-friendly environment, urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain tech talent, and communities that "think big and creatively" when considering real estate options.

The company also said incentives offered by state and local governments will be "significant factors" in the decision.

Amazon said it will not view HQ2 as a satellite office for the company.

Amazon today is one of the very biggest employers in the the tech world, with 380,000 staff. Tech is seem by many as the industry of the US of today, but while some tech companies have notably less direct employees than their more industrial predecessors, Amazon is partly an exception because of its massive logistics operations.

This vacation headquarters for Amazon is expected to equal (in size and investment) the company's Seattle headquarters-which they're now calling HQ1. Amazon expects the new jobs, many of which will be in software development, to have average salaries of more than $100,000.

The company has also been expanding a lot outside of the U.S. "There's no downside risk of bad PR", he added. The company completed its acquisition of Whole Foods last week and began overhauling the grocery chain by lowering some prices and integrating Amazon services.

The company's Seattle headquarters is spread across 8.1 million square feet in 33 buildings and employs more than 40,000 people.
