Birmingham beats Liverpool in UK's Commonwealth Games 2022 bid

Birmingham beats Liverpool in UK's Commonwealth Games 2022 bid

Birmingham has been congratulated by the mayor of Liverpool after being named Great Britain's candidate to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"I'd like to congratulate the city of Birmingham on making it to the next phase, and would like to offer this city's support to the bid as it aims to represent the United Kingdom internationally", Liverpool 2022 bid Chairman Brian Barwick said in a statement.

The decision by the Commonwealth Games Delivery Unit (CGDU) means Birmingham moves to the next stage of the process - convincing the United Kingdom government to approve the bid and underwrite much of its cost.

1998 host city Kuala Lumpur, which last month staged the South East Asian Games, has also expressed an interest but has acknowledged that it may not be able to secure backing from the Malaysian government before the CGF's deadline for bids, meaning Birmingham is the frontrunner provided its final bid is approved by Whitehall and accepted by the CGF.

"It will be great to see the Commonwealth Games back in the United Kingdom and we wish Birmingham well for the next stage in this process".

Should Birmingham's bid be successful, the Alexander Stadium will be upgraded into a 40,000-seat arena.

Arie Luyendyk Jr. Announced As Next 'Bachelor' In Surprise Twist
This marks the second season of " The Bachelor " in a row that ABC has chosen to select a Bachelor from an earlier season . Although he was born in the Netherlands, Luyendyk spent the majority of his racing career in the U.S.

Liverpool has lost its bid to be the UK's choice for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Three halls at the NEC would also be used.

The event is up for grabs after Durban was stripped of hosting duties.

Organisers will now need to convince the Commonwealth Games Federation it should stage the event, and are set to face opposition from Canada and Malaysia.

That leaves London's Lee Valley VeloPark, built for the 2012 Olympic Games, or the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, where the velodrome was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games - as the two workable options.

"Birmingham provided an excellent and inspirational bid and can deliver a Commonwealth Games that will deliver a lasting impact, not just for the city and the West Midlands but the United Kingdom as whole", said Commonwealth Games England chief executive Paul Blanchard, part of a six-strong panel that made the decision.
