Bomb explodes in IN post office, injuring female employee

First-responders were called to the post office at 901 E. Chicago Avenue around 6 p.m. for a reports of an explosion, East Chicago Acting Fire Chief Francisco Mendez said. A female postal worker suffered minor injuries in the explosion and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, WLS-TV said.

Fire Chief Anthony Serna could not confirm if anyone was in the building.

A pipe bomb exploded at a post office in northwest in on Wednesday, injuring one worker, media reported.

At least two bomb-sniffing dogs with the Lake County Sheriff's Department were on the scene as well.

The FBI is investigating after an explosion at a post office in East Chicago, Indiana injured a postal worker on Wednesday. He added that he believed the post office was closed for the day during the explosion.

Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene.

A police spokeswoman did not immediately return a call from The Times.
