Indonesian police have also pledged to bar Islamist groups from staging a rally on Friday at the Borobudur Buddhist temple in central Java to protest against the treatment of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims. They must not be turned back or deported.

The Rohingya are denied citizenship in Myanmar, which regards them as illegal immigrants even though many have been there for many generations.

Sectarian violence between Buddhists and Muslims has flared periodically for more than a decade.

"We have estimated the number based on the reports from different non-governmental organizations working on the ground for the refugees", Joseph Tripura, spokesman for the United Nations High Commission for Refugee in Dhaka, said.

Rohingya representatives have said that around 400 people were killed during the operation.
