Irma knocks out power to almost 6 million - authorities

In the Florida Keys, which were struck by the storm at a Category 4 strength, the situation seems far more dire.

Warnings of risky storm surges remained in effect through vast swaths of peninsular Florida, where more than six million people had been ordered to flee Irma in one of the biggest evacuations in United States history.

Gov. Roy Cooper said businesses and people in North Carolina should be prepared for anything that Hurricane Irma could bring to the state.

Jose's core is expected to pass near or just east of the northern Leeward Islands, the hurricane center said, where Hurricane Irma battered some of the islands - Barbuda, St. Martin and St. Barts - just days ago.

Police spokesman Greg Bueno said the crash occurred in Hardee County, southeast of Tampa, Fox 35 reported.

The aftermath of the storm has left many areas completely underwater, especially islands off the coast of Florida.

Of the total US deaths from injuries linked to Irma so far, at least six were in Florida and one was in Georgia. There is a 20% chance the storm will gain tropical characteristics if it stays organized as it moves through an unfavorable environment.

It killed at least 26 people before leaving the Caribbean for Florida. "The president's been monitoring this storm 24/7", Pence said, urging residents in Irma's path to heed warnings from local officials. Florida's largest city, Miami, was spared the brunt of the storm but was still battered.

"Tomorrow we'll assess the damage and try to get the engineering part of it corrected", said Miami's Deputy building Director Maurice Pons.

"The center of Irma will move near the northwestern coast of the Florida Peninsula this morning, cross the eastern Florida Panhandle into southern Georgia this afternoon, and move through southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama tonight and Tuesday", the National Weather Service predicts.

"He said that same thing I said, the biggest thing you can do right now is pray for us", Scott continued.

"I'm in great communication with the White House and Homeland Security", Long said.
