Irma weakens to Tropical Depression, moves into Georgia

Tampa hasn't been hit by a major hurricane since 1921, but on Sunday it looked like Hurricane Irma was about to change that.

Irma, which first made landfall on Wednesday, has now weakened to a Tropical Depression.

Forecasters said the greater Miami area of six million people could still get life-threatening hurricane winds and a storm surge of 4ft to 6ft.

"Tonight, I'm sweating. Tonight I'm scared to death", said Carol Walterson Stroud, 60, who sought refuge in a centre for the elderly in Florida's southernmost city with her husband, granddaughter and dog.

He said teams were assessing the storm's impact on the bridges that link the keys, which may not be safe to cross.

"It's certainly one of those metropolitan areas where we have one of the greatest concerns, particularly with storm surge, particularly with inexperience", Feltgen said.

The whole of the southern tip of Florida has seen high winds, driving rain and storm surges.

A tree snapped in half by Hurricane Irma falls on a power line in Alachua County, causing much of Newberry to lose power.

The National Weather Service's Bill South stayed behind in Key West to work with first responders. St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue has also suspended emergency services due to risky weather conditions.

If all those households do lose power, then it could be the largest number of outages any utility company has ever had to grapple with, FPL spokesman Chris McGrath told reporters.

It had been struggling in the water, before getting trapped by the rocks. "We were down on the beach for lunch with my family. Another onlooker, Alex Martiniuk, tweeted: "Shark in Manly bower pool right now".

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay has declared a curfew in the Florida Keys between dusk and dawn after devastating Hurricane Irma swept through the island chain.

The storm was earlier pummelling the area around the city of Fort Myers. A turn toward the north-northwest is forecast Monday night.

All American flights remain canceled through Monday at 12 other Florida airports, as well as Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia.

The storm was moving 14 miles per hour north, but forecasters left a tropical storm warning in place from Jupiter Inlet south as Sunday came to a close.

Jones warned that some Floridians "may not have power for a number of days, if not weeks".

Tropical force winds should subside around 10 p.m., after which Florida Power & Light can begin restoring power to the hundreds of thousands without it in South Florida.

While considering how the city would react, Buckhorn quoted boxer Mike Tyson, saying, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face".

Buckhorn added, "We know we are ground zero for this storm".

"You just have such incredible demand for gas right now as people pack up and leave", said James Miller, director of communications for the Florida Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association. "This is what we do". But he emphasized that Tampa is prepared.
