The Japanese prime minister will arrive in Ahmedabad on Wednesday for the foundation ceremony slated for Thursday.

Japan will provide 85 percent of the total project cost of $19 billion in soft loans. It will have a capacity of 750 passengers.

The deadline set for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train is August 15, 2022, ahead of the earlier plan to complete it only by December 2013 on the lines of 2022 target set by the prime minister for completion of other dozen or so high-profile projects.

"The commencement of work on the country's first High Speed Rail (Bullet train) project will begin on September 14 in Ahmedabad", Mr Goyal told reporters, adding that the bullet train technology would "revolutionise and transform the transport sector".

The city of Ahmedabad is being decked up and potholed roads on the route Japanese delegation is expected to travel have been resurfaced.
