Irma death toll in US rises to 11

Hurricane Jose, the storm that followed Hurricane Irma across the ocean, has chose to hang around longer as a potential threat to the East Coast. The beachfront community and neighboring cities ordered residents to evacuate.

The storm has now been downgraded to a tropical depression and is expected to peter out in the coming days. The islands were closed to the public Tuesday while damage is assessed, and several areas remain without water, power or communications, officials said.

"Basically, every house in the Keys was impacted some way", FEMA Administrator Brock Long said.

Though relief efforts are just starting to shape up as curfews are slowly lifted and first responders are able to reach the areas most affected, there is one concrete way you can help families in Florida immediately.

The U.S. death toll for Irma has increased to 11 people after three deaths were reported in Georgia and one in SC.

Irma made landfall on Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm at Cudjoe Key, about 75 miles from Key Largo, where the NBC 6 helicopter was flying. It pounded the entire state in the 48 hours to follow.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 90 percent of homes in the Florida Keys suffered some damage. In Coconut Grove, boats were tossed into docks, piled on top of one another. Duke Energy had almost 1.3 million customers without electricity.

"I've had phone calls all day long about nursing homes and assisted living that don't have their power", Gov. Rick Scott said at a press conference Monday.
