Lascelles secures Newcastle's third straight win

Jamal Lascelles was the hero for Newcastle for the second week in a row as he grabbed the victor in a 2-1 win over Stoke City at St. James' Park on Saturday.

Having netted the victor against Swansea last weekend, Jamal Lascelles again rose high to head the hosts to a third straight top-flight victory for the first time in nearly three years. He was given the chance to score a hat trick today but he spurned every opportunity before being mercifully replaced by Dwight Gayle in the 78th.

Newcastle displayed all the battling qualities Stoke used to take pride in. Christian Atsu ghosts in at the far post and hammers home from Matt Ritchie's cross.

Magpies forward Joselu had several chances to put the game beyond his former side, but found Potters goalkeeper Jack Butland in good form.

The 20-year-old also made the provisional squad for the Swansea clash but did not make the match-day squad.

The Padma Vibhushan recipient is the only Air Force officer to have been promoted to a five-star rank, according to the newspaper. After the death of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in 2008, he became the only living Indian military officer with a five-star rank.

"They seem to be getting back into the groove a bit, so I don't think they'll get battered, but St. James' Park will be tough and the atmosphere will be rocking".

Elliot did come to Newcastle's rescue with 64 minutes gone when he turned away Mame Biram Diouf's goal-bound header from Shaqiri's cross.

It mattered little though as Ritchie and Lascelles combined to restore Newcastle's lead, the defender credited with the goal as he challenged Wimmer in heading home a corner.

In the end, Benitez had to watch the game on television at his home in the north-west, although he revealed even that did not go smoothly as the weather interfered with the satellite signal.
