49ers' Pierre Garcon faces uphill battle against Seahawks in Week 2

49ers' Pierre Garcon faces uphill battle against Seahawks in Week 2

Seahawks lead series, 21-15. This is getting to be a trend for Seattle in the opening game. That's not what 49ers fans expected when Shanahan was hired. But, in the Week 1 loss to the Carolina Panthers, the team was outcoached, outmatched and, especially on offense, outplayed. Quarterback Brian Hoyer completed 24 of 35 passes for 193 yards with one interception.

The 49ers converted just two of 11 third downs and only managed 217 yards of total offense. But they weren't able to run it much because they trailed. Shanahan needs to call a cleaner game and help his players avoid silly mistakes.

Pushing the tempo offensively may be a short-term answer to give the Seattle offensive line a chance to succeed. The team averaged just 1.9 yards on the other carries.

San Francisco's defense will be challenged without standout rookie linebacker Reuben Foster, whose ankle sprain will sideline him at least a couple of weeks. He has been in a walking boot and will not play vs. the Seahawks.

But Colonel Edgard Arevalo, the military's public affairs chief, said: "We are still validating that information". Troops retook Bato mosque and Amaitul Islamiya Marawi Foundation (JIMF), two Maute strongholds, Saturday.

They always have lately against the 49ers, the get-well card that the Seahawks hope again delivers. Seattle was woefully ineffective on the ground in last week's opener against the Packers. Sherman should be matched up against Garcon in what will be a tightly contested battle anytime Garcon gets the ball thrown his way.

Whether Sherman will miss his first game of his career or not, the Seahawks are confident in their depth at corner. Jones intercepted Aaron Rodgers last week, only to have his touchdown return nullified due to a penalty. If Sherman is unable to play or is limitied, the Seahawks' inexperienced corners will rely heavily on the veteran leadership of free safety Earl Thomas and strong safety Kam Chancellor.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, if things go according to how the odds think they will, they could be in for a rough day in Seattle on Sunday afternoon. The veteran has gone 6-10 in previous road starts, winning twice at Cincinnati and once each at Jacksonville, Tennessee, Atlanta and Minnesota.

Tight end Jimmy Graham was targeted seven times last week, but finished with only 8 yards on three catches, including an uncharacteristic drop on a third down in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the worst offensive line in the National Football League (by a longshot) lived up to its reputation as Seattle could not get anything going offensively, managing just 225 total yards in the 17-9 loss to the Packers. The 49ers don't present the same kind of problems with their pass rushers, but this is a serious problem area for Seattle, something left over from a year ago when they couldn't keep Russell Wilson clean. But the 49ers, once Seattle's most heated rival, have instead been the Seahawks' biggest punching bag the last few years, the team to see when the patient has felt a little ill.
