Andy Rubin answers burning Essential Phone questions: updates, jacks, expansions and more

Andy Rubin's Essential smartphone lineup was launched, saying that it will neither be exclusive to any carriers nor do carry even a brand logo. The Essential PH-1 has been started shipping off a few weeks ago to the customers those who have pre-ordered a couple of months ago. Word of the new audio accessory came directly from Andy Rubin when he was in a Reddit AMA recently.

However, unlike like most of the other devices that have ditched the headphone jack, the Essential's modularity is set to add the port back to the smartphone.

With Android 8.0 Oreo already making its way to Pixel handsets and with various OEMs already working on the update for their devices, the question is when will the Essential Phone receive its tasty treat?

When asked about a new 3.5mm headphone port accessory, the company revealed plans for new Click Connector accessories. "We are continuing to look at supporting ideas, like cameras", reads the Reddit post.

Headphone jacks are pretty big components and they don't play nice with all-screen Phone architectures. The company said during the Reddit AMA that the Essential Phone charging dock will be "out shortly".

United Nations Security Council condemns highly provocative North Korea missile launch
Dictator Kim Jong-un has repeatedly threatened to attack both Guam and Japan with missiles, possibly using nuclear warheads. He called on China and Russian Federation in particular to use their ultimate leverage over North Korea.

"We studied it very seriously, but fitting a headphone jack into our Phone required tradeoffs we were uncomfortable with", a company official explained. "Then we made sure we to build ya'll a high-quality DAC in a tiny adapter that can elegantly live on your headphones", reads the post.

Now there is no release date for this particular Click Accessory from Essential. For those that own the Essential PH-1, also referred to simply as the Essential Phone, the update to Oreo may be of particular interest as many thought the phone would end up launching with Oreo out of the box, but that ended up not being the case when the phone was announced earlier this year.

The Essential Phone arrived late last month running Android Nougat.

The pending arrival of an attachment that comes with a headphone jack and a promise of an Android Oreo upgrade by November may make more customers think of buying the Essential Phone.
