China urges peaceful, diplomatic resolution to North Korea tensions

"They should do more to find effective ways to resume dialogue and negotiation", Ambassador Cui Tiankai stated on Friday during an embassy event.

Ambassador Cui Tiankai on Friday told reporters at an embassy event: "Honestly, I think the United States should be doing ... much more than now, so that there's real effective global co-operation on this issue".

Cui on Friday cautioned against putting China-US trade on the table.

China on Friday said it opposes ballistic missile launches by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) against UN Security Council resolutions.

He said in talks on the phone with US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, they agreed that Tokyo and Washington will continue to put "visible" pressure on North Korea.

The South Korean defense ministry said the live-fire ballistic missile drill was approved by President Moon Jae-In.

But the Chinese government has pushed back against the notion that it has any control over Pyongyang, and says it is the United States that should be doing more.

A Hwasong-12 medium-range ballistic missile "zoomed to the sky with dazzling flash and big explosion" and "crossed the sky above Hokkaido of Japan along the preset flight track and accurately hit the preset target waters in the Pacific", Xinhua news agency cited the report as saying. According to the state-run KCNA news agency, leader Kim Jong-un said: "Our goal is to make the rulers of the U.S. dare not talk about military option regarding us".

This is while White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster warned that Washington was running out of patience for diplomatic solutions, noting, "For those. who have been commenting on a lack of a military option, there is a military option". "Without implementing this, we also will consider it as a non-compliance with the resolution".

The U.S. announced its latest round of harsh sanctions on the isolated nation this week, affecting oil, gas, and other exports to North Korea. According to the US and South Korean military, the missile was launched from the Pyongyang area.
