Dozens of refugees killed in DR Congo

The events occurred Friday afternoon in Kamanyola in eastern Congo when a group of Burundian refugees went to an office of the Congolese intelligence service to demand information about several other refugees who had been detained, said Jean-Chrysostome Kijana, a member of the civil society group, which is based in Congo.

Protesters gathered in Paris on Saturday to protest over violence in Burundi, a day after at least 30 Burundian refugees were killed in clashes with Congolese security forces over plans to send some of them home.

Eyewitness Alfred Rukungo said the soldiers continued shooting into the crowd even after some refugees were wounded.

Kamanyola is home to 2,000 of the almost 44,000 people who have fled Burundi to neighboring Congo, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency.

"So far, we have counted 31 dead and at least 105 injured, 15 of them seriously", the refugee said.

There are over 400,000 Burundian refugees in DRC who fled after violence erupted in their country in April 2015 when incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza refused to leave power after serving two terms and stood in elections for a third term.

Most of the refugees involved in yesterday's incident are followers of a female prophet called Zebiya, who has attested to seeing visions of the Virgin Mary in northern Burundi, according to testimony to AFP from some of them.

Burundi's government firmly rejected the allegations, accusing the United Nations investigators of being "mercenaries" in a Western plot to "enslave African states".
