The vehicle was wonderful. The auto was unbelievable, wonderful track, if you feel the auto is coming alive and you can do what you want to. On his final lap he even glanced the wall, giving him some concern when he checked the vehicle over in parc fermé.

"In theory it should be better here than in Monza", Vettel said. "I was lucky there was only one corner left".

On one of Formula One's hardest tracks for overtaking, even as talented a driver as Hamilton will be pushed to secure a podium.

His joy was evident as he let out a high-pitched shrill for several seconds, before shouting "Grande Lavoro!"

The Ferrari driver took pole position while the world championship leader had to make do with fifth on the grid.

"I'm still full of adrenaline so maybe whatever I say doesn't make any sense", a breathless Vettel, who let out a loud whoop of joy over the team-radio, said after he stepped out of the vehicle. "The vehicle switched from off to on". "We just need to assess what's making our vehicle perform less".

He then survived a light brush of the wall at the right-hander coming out from under the grandstand on his second run to improve to a 1m39.491s to take pole from Red Bull driver Max Verstappen by 0.323 seconds.

"I still believe I can win it. I knew we had it in us, was a bit of a struggle to get there, now I'm just happy". I thought Red Bull would be as quick as they were.

Hamilton complained of problems with his tire temperatures, while Bottas simply could not find any rhythm.

Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz will move to Renault on loan next year as part of the complex deal while Fernando Alonso is also set to extend his stay at McLaren.

Kimi Raikkonen was first out in Q2, looking to get the Ferraris up the leaderboard.

But not to this extent.

"It's the worst case for us", Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff said.

He has cause to worry.

But Vettel produced the goods when it mattered most with a record-breaking lap of one minute and 39.481 seconds to provide the best possible answer to both his and Ferrari's disappointing performance in Italy last time out.

Hamilton acknowledged the troubles that have plagued the team in this track in the past.

Ricciardo has finished on the dais in his last three trips to Singapore, setting the fastest lap for the past two years and finishing runner-up on both occasions.

The drivers eliminated in first session were Kevin Magnussen, Massa, Stroll, Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson. A clear inference from the free practice sessions and qualifying has been how the Red Bull cars have been leading the pack, and the McLaren's who have had the worst engine could place the vehicle as high as P3 on the time-sheets.

This bid was foiled after more than a month's time when last infiltration was repulsed with fatal casualties on militant side. Two AK-47 rifles and war-like stores were recovered from them, the army spokesperson said.
