Northern Illinois Capitalizes On Nebraska's Charitable Offense To Pull Upset In Lincoln

Nebraska put up 171 more yards of total offense than Northern Illinois, but the Huskies used three interceptions including a pair of first-quarter pick sixes to defeat the Huskers, 21-17, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Northern Illinois sophomore quarterback Daniel Santacaterina was 15 of 22 for 128 yards. Which, normally would be a great thing. "They just had a ideal defense, I took a gamble and they blitzed the corner who jumped that bubble throw and took it to the house".

Disaster struck again for Nebraska when defensive end Drequan Brown hit Lee as he threw and Johnson picked off the diminished pass, returning it 25 yards for a score to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

Tulane transfer Tanner Lee has shown glimpses of his National Football League arm talent in his first two games with the Cornhuskers, but he was intercepted four times against the Ducks and has completed only 52.1 percent of his passes thus far. Nebraska responded in the second half, and briefly took a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but NIU running back Jordan Huff capped a 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the Huskies the lead for good.

That's not the way to get a win at home. In the last two games, he has attempted 88 passes and suffered seven interceptions - one nearly every 12 attempts.

"We really found something to work with after that OR game and we knew we wanted to get going from the jump", Nebraska linebacker Luke Gifford said.

"We're trying to come out of a hole", Riley said.

NIU took a 14-0 lead with 1:13 to play in the quarter.

The Huskers' first-half offensive struggles culminated with Drew Brown's 37-yard field goal attempt being blocked on the final play of the half.

Combined with last week's 42-35 loss at OR, the Huskers have trailed at halftime in their last two games by the total score of 56-14.

The visitors missed a 39-yard field goal and muffed a punt that Nebraska recovered at the 2-yard line to help the Huskers score their first TD. I-back Mikale Wilbon led the Nebraska backs with 90 yards on 24 carries.

"I would say it's pretty similar to a "normal" tight end - it's just I'm more of a heavier side on the run game", Ketter said. Tanner Lee is worst QB in Husker history.

Nebraska, which was 3-0 against MAC teams prior to Saturday, was held scoreless in the first half at home for the first time since 2007. "I think we were happy with that". "I'd be making it up if I said I could sense a performance like this". Lurry's play came after Nebraska had opened the game by driving from its 25-yard line to the Nebraska 17. Luke Gifford led the Huskers with eight stops.
