Officials are holding daily calls with those facilities to make sure they have everything they need to care for their residents.

On Saturday, Scott directed the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration to issue emergency rules requiring all of the state's assisted living facilities to have generators, a key source of power when electricity goes out.

Some 3.1 million homes and businesses, representing close to one-third of the state's population, were without power on Thursday in Florida and neighboring states. "We're going to be with you tomorrow", Trump said. Storey said at the city's first news conference there were "a number of critical patients".

"Irma was a beast", Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach said simply, speaking to The Associated Press.

Police have started a criminal investigation into the deaths. Eight patients at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills died this week after being exposed to the heat.

Nursing home officials blamed a blown transformer for cutting power to the air conditioning unit.

The air conditioning came back on around 2 p.m. Wednesday, when the only people left at the facility were detectives.

Sen Lauren Book, D-Plantation, announced Friday she would be filing a bill requiring all ALFs and nursing homes to have working generators. Another 18 patients in an adjacent behavioral health facility also were evacuated.

"There's nothing we can do", Long said.

Police responded and chose to evacuate.

The governor's spokeswoman, Lauren Schenone, confirmed that the calls did take place and said that caregivers were instructed to dial 911 if they felt their patients were unsafe.

Elsewhere, Irma has been blamed for four deaths in SC and two in Georgia. We are not looking at amnesty, We are looking at allowing people to stay here. Earlier in his one-day visit to Florida, Trump also lauded state and federal officials for their preparation and response to the hurricane.
