Annemiek van Vleuten wins elite women's time trial as Dutch dominate

The time was almost a minute slower than Dutch victor Annemiek van Vleuten, who headed off two other accomplished riders - second-placed compatriot Anna van Der Breggen and Australian Katrin Garfoot.

That time gave her victory by 12 seconds from her compatriot - and team-mate for this weekend's road race - Van der Breggen, an impressive one-two for the Netherlands squad. The 27-year-old benefitted from starting on dry roads.

An extended stay in the hot seat then followed for van der Breggen, as a succession of riders failed to beat her time on the first and second intermediate time checks - and the rain started to fall. "To be world champion in the TT, I never thought it would be, but this year I've started to believe", she said. Katrin Garfoot of Australia was 19 seconds off the pace to take the bronze medal.

The result continues a world championships where Villumsen has looked strong without the reward of a medal, following a team time trial where she was the strongest rider on a team plauged by bad luck, claiming a fifth place finish. Defending champion Amber Neben (USA) finished in 11th spot, 1-41.99 behind van Vleuten.

2nd LD: 7.1 magnitude quake kills 2 in central Mexico, topples buildings
At least 16,000 homes were destroyed in southern Mexico , as that quake was the strongest to hit the country in "centuries". Mexico residents reported that buildings trembled as thousands escaped to the streets for fear of their lives.

The 34-year-old Van Vleuten suffered a horrific crash in last year's Olympic Road Race in Rio de Janeiro, fracturing her back in three places and ending up in intensive care.

"The downs make the ups more lovely, makes it really special", the Dutchwoman added. "[Winning the world title] after crashing in Rio makes the story really special".

Podium for the elite women's time trial, 2017 World Championships.
