Rafael Nadal beats Nick Kyrgios to claim second China Open title

World number one Rafael Nadal demolished Nick Kyrgios to win his sixth title of the season at the China Open.

The 31-year-old nearly shut out Kyrgios in the second set and took a 5-0 lead before the Australian won his solitary game to slightly delay the inevitable as Nadal sauntered to his 12th consecutive win.

"I've been asking myself that question for the last couple of years". His first-serve percentage mostly languished under the 50 percent mark.

"Tennis is a great life - we're well paid and the perks are pretty good - but it can feel empty if you're just doing it for the money", he said.

He saved two match points in his nervy opener against Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

The 22-year-old then collected a penalty point and he continued to rant as he trudged back to his chair, initially to whistles from the crowd and then cheers to encourage him. Nadal took immediate control of the third set, racing to a 4-0 lead.

Nadal has one of the best defence in tennis right now, but he needs to be wary of Kyrgios' big-serving ability. He played well, I played awful.

Garcia also won her final in straight sets.

"She played fantastic tennis", Halep said of the victor from Spain. "She deserved to win today".

Jared Donaldson will be the first opponent for the 31-year-old after he beat Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Ostapenko entered the semifinal without the loss of a set during the week. "This game was definitely very important".

Emotional Simona Halep called it the best day of her life and targeted a maiden Grand Slam as she surged to number one in the world for the first time on Saturday. Garcia fell to her knees in celebration. "It went so fast".

Dimitrov hit a backhand crosscourt victor to take the second set on Nadal's serve in the 10th game.

In that 2014 fourth-round encounter at Wimbledon, the then 144th-ranked Kyrgios emerged a four-set victor.

This was Nadal's second China Open title.

The Spaniard, appearing in the 110th final of his career, cruised to his first China Open title since 2005 as eighth-seeded Kyrgios was hindered by his own inconsistency and rarely troubled the top seed.
