"The only way the plaintiffs can survive is if the court accepts the idea that a bump stock accessory is not covered under the U.S. Congress' components parts definition", Lytton said, adding that the lawsuit did not present novel legal arguments. The physical injuries are staggering, and we know the emotional injuries can be equally severe and long term.

A Las Vegas law firm and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence have filed a class-action lawsuit against businesses profiting off bump stocks, devices used in the October 1 shooting that killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more at a Las Vegas music festival. The attorneys said they plan to address the lawsuit at a press conference on Tuesday. The National Rifle Association, which has consistently opposed new weapon restrictions, also has said the device should be subject to additional regulations.

Bump stocks allow semiautomatic rifles to operate as if they were fully automatic machine guns, which are heavily restricted in the United States. In 2010 letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms Explosives, ("ATF") Slide Fire wrote that the bump stocks were meant to assist "persons whose hands have limited mobility". The complaint alleges that plaintiffs are unaware of bump stocks actually being marketed or sold only to people whose hands had limited mobility. On the auction site gunbroker.com, the bidding for bump stocks, which allow a shooter to fire a semiautomatic weapon at almost full-auto speeds, has risen to four or five times the accessories' previous retail price.

New Law Challenges 'Evils' Of Pharma Profits, California Governor Claims
Yesterday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that requires drug makers to explain and justify price increases.

Gunman Stephen Paddock, who killed himself after carrying out the attack, had a dozen bump stocks in his hotel room at the time his body was found by police. When Bump Fire was still in business, its stocks sold for just $99. Paddock may not have launched his military-style assault without a bump stock. Also, some retailers have stopped selling bump stock products after the shootings.

The suit seeks a court-supervised psychological monitoring program for the class plaintiffs, paid for by the defendants, as well as punitive damages. The firm is best known for its multimillion-dollar verdicts, including two verdicts in excess of $500 million against a pharmaceutical company.

For more than 25 years, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence has represented victims of gun violence litigation cases across the country.
