The paper also reported that the 64 year-old shooter from Mesquite, Nev., may have continued shooting into the hotel hallway after striking Campos, with indications that a maintenance worker appeared in the hallway outside Paddock's door during the shooting rampage, and that the gunman may have interrupted his firing at the crowd to shoot once again into the hallway, Roberts said.

But the typical investigative avenues that have helped uncover the motive in past shootings have yielded few clues about Paddock, a professional gambler who spent almost every waking hour playing video poker at casinos.

The lights, along with the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign at the Stip's south end, were dimmed at 10:05 p.m. for 11 minutes - or roughly how long the October 1 shootings lasted.

"We can not be certain about the most recent timeline", said Debra DeShong, a spokeswoman for MGM Resorts International.

The gunman who killed 58 people in the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history targeted aviation fuel tanks, stocked his auto with explosives and had personal protection gear as part of an escape plan, authorities said Monday.

"It's because this individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find the answers to those actions", Lombardo said. He eventually killed himself before authorities reached his room, police said. "We believe he made a decision to take the lives he did and he had a very purposeful plan that he carried out". Investigators have found 200 incidents of Paddock moving through the city, and at no time was he with anyone else, Lombardo said. "As evidenced by law enforcement briefings over the past week, many facts are still unverified and continue to change as events are under review".

The sheriff also changed the timeline of the shooting, explaining that a security guard in the hotel's hallway responding to a report of an open door heard drilling from Paddock's room.

A motive for the carnage remains unclear and while police said they recovered a document with numbers on it in Paddock's hotel room, Lombardo on Monday declined to say what it meant.

Paddock had power tools and was trying to drill a hole in a wall, perhaps to mount another of the security cameras he set up around him, or to point a rifle through, but he never completed the work, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said.

"I'm here to help them move forward with their investigation".

Investigators have interviewed the suspect's brother, Eric Paddock, and other family members, according to Lombardo.

A building engineer at the Las Vegas hotel where Stephen Paddock was holed up during his massacre last week described being pinned down in a hallway after the gunman opened fire on him from behind the door of his hotel suite shooting perch. "I want to help them understand what they're seeing", Eric Paddock told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
