The findings are contained in the first comprehensive report on the crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine State by the U.N. Human Rights Office, after interviews with dozens of people on the ground.

He lauded the Saudi initiative of calling the UN and all friendly nations to condemn Myanmar government and to end the plight of the Muslim minority.

Myanmar dismisses that. It says it is fighting a legitimate campaign against Rohingya "terrorists".

This included accounts of soldiers surrounding homes and firing indiscriminately as residents ran for their lives as well as uniformed men gang-raping women and girls, some as young as five.

"Efforts were taken to effectively erase signs of memorable landmarks in the geography of the Rohingya landscape and memory in such a way that a return to their lands would yield nothing but a desolate and unrecognisable terrain", it added.

According to witnesses and human rights organisations, the army torched villages and killed an undetermined number of civilians, something the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".
