State police chief Loknath Behera allays fears on migrant safety

"Kerala is totally safe for people from outside the states, including migrant workers", he said and added that a "technology-based" probe was on to trace the source of the dubious campaign.

State police chief Loknath Behera on Tuesday issued a statement giving assurances of safety to migrant workers in the backdrop of fake stories being circulated on social media platforms of widespread attacks on workers from other states.

Miscreants spreading rumours among migrant workers in Kerala to cause discord is highly condemnable.

Vijayan said there was a concerted attempt from north India to insult Kerala and destroy the harmony in the state. "It will always remain as one of the best states in the country for people to work & live in". Seeing messages in WhatsApp and Facebook groups, families are putting pressure on the workers to return at the earliest. Clips claimed that some migrants had been killed after being tortured by locals, adds the newspaper.

Things took a turn on Friday, when pictures of a West Bengal youth who allegedly committed suicide, appeared in the social media.

Unlike other lawmakers of the party, who were arrested, he emerged smiling. With the TMC accusing him of hobnobbing with the BJP, he quit the party.

The false campaign also used videos of mob lynching in the North to scare and trigger panic among the workers. He said that unlike what is being spread, the migrant workers are getting due recognition in the state, and the government is coming up with several welfare initiatives for them.

Even notices were being distributed in Bengal to spread fear among the Bengalis.

Behra said the Cyber Police had already started an investigation and "the district collector and district police chief in all the districts will meet and discuss this issue and will instil confidence in the minds of the migrant labourers".

Kerala has a migrant population of 2.5 million.
