Call Off Strike On October 13, OMCs Tell Fuel Dealers

For quite some time, the dealers are demanding inclusion of petroleum products under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Meanwhile, the petrol bunk owners in the Telugu states have extended their support to the strike call.

Sanjiv Singh, Chairman of Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the country's largest fuel retailer, stated that the strike call was totally unjustified as the oil firms have accepted all demands and raised dealers commission only a few weeks ago.

"The state government can invoke Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), they can take over pumps and give to oil companies for operating, and we can takeover petrol pumps".

The United Petroleum Front, an umbrella organization of three national-level bodies of petrol dealers - Federation of All India Petroleum Traders, All India Petroleum Dealers Association and Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers, in its recent meeting chose to the observe the strike after rounds of discussion with the policy makers failed.

Earlier, the petrol and diesel dealers' strike against daily revision of petrol and diesel prices scheduled on June 16 was deferred. Ajay Bansal, All India Petroleum Dealers Association President told ANI that they will go on indefinite strike from October 27 if no response is received from oil companies.

According to the OMCs, certain dealers have managed to manipulate the vending machines at the petrol pumps that were sealed by Weights & Measure Department (W&MD) and cheat the consumers. The UPF represents over 54,000 dealers from the Federation of All-India Petroleum Traders, the All-India Petroleum Dealers Association and the Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers.

All the three constituents of the United Petroleum Front (UPF) have called off the proposed all India strike planned for Oct 13 and Oct 27. "This was conveyed to the oil companies through written statements, underlining their decision to this effect".

The three OMCs have appealed to these dealers not to go ahead with the strike, and have said that even if they do, the 1,000 "company-owned, company-operated" stations will continue operations.
