Himachal Pradesh elections 2017: Voting on November 9, counting on December 18

According to media reports, Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti said the polls in Gujarat will be held before December 18. The votes will be cast on November 9. The EC sources said the Himachal elections may be held early since the state will be in the grip of extremely cold wave and heavy snowfall by November end and the Lahaul-Spiti district may even become inaccessible by early December. The counting of votes will take place on 18 December.

The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on January 22, the Election Commission today while responding to a question as to why elections to both assemblies were not announced. MCC have to be for 46 days said Election Commission.

Meanwhile, the term of the current Himachal Pradesh Assembly ends next month. As far as practical, polling stations are being made disabled-friendly, so that they can exercise their franchise.

Announcing the dates, Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti said the polling process for Himachal Pradesh will begin with the issue of election notification on October 16, and the last date for filing nomination is October 23. VVPAT machines will also be there along with EVMs. Also, bulk SMSes and voice messages on phone will come in the purview of election advertisements, Joti added.

This, he said, is being done to ensure that the voting pattern of one state does not affect the other state.
